It’s a really weird time in our lives, for a lot of reasons. Just one of them… the toilet paper situation. Hoarders have taken this once readily available essential, and stocked their own shelves. Buying it online is a gamble and a time consuming effort. Whether the shortage was a result of assuming that stores would close, or because of quarantine panic, we are all stuck in this awkward situation. Here are some great alternatives for toilet paper – until things return to normal, and we can stop considering it a comfort item!
Keep in mind – the only thing you should be flushing, according to professional plumbers and news articles, is toilet paper. “Flushable” wipes, paper towels, tissues and anything else can cause major plumbing issues.
Because you shouldn’t be flushing the items listed below,
why not stock up on trash bags right now, too?
Before you scoff the whole “don’t flush flushable wipes” statement – read this. Sure, you can flush them, under very specific conditions that most people can’t and won’t follow. These are still one of the best alternatives to toilet paper, though! Just toss them in the trash when you’re done using them.
Go to some Asian or South American countries, and a bidet is a common sight in the bathroom! It’s becoming more and more easy to see why they are so popular, though. And they sure make a great alternative to toilet paper. In fact, you’d never have to worry about another pandemic causing tp hoarding again, with one of these!
Paper towels aren’t just for wiping up spills anymore! These are harder to come by (like toilet paper), but if you watch and hunt down the cheaper brands, you’ll be able to do your business, and move on. 😉 Don’t forget – you don’t want to flush paper towels, unless you want to pay for serious plumbing issues later on!
If it’s good enough for baby, it’s good enough for you, right? Baby wipes offer a great cleaning option in a pinch. Even better, they come in large capacity containers, and are very inexpensive, too. In fact, you can even opt for sensitive skin wipes!
CLOTH RAGS (also known as “Family Cloth”)
Consider old sheets, towels and t-shirts that you might have in a donate pile in your garage. These rags are pieces of larger cloth items that are intended for one-time use when you’re cleaning. And in this case, they would be intended for the exact same thing! Don’t want to give up your old stuff? Purchase some rags!
If you’re a drive-thru visitor that stores those paper napkins in your glove compartment, you’re in luck! Run out there and grab that stack! These are a paper towel/toilet paper hybrid that are super easy to accumulate, and very inexpensive, as well. Score almost 1,000 paper napkins for under $30!
Those lonely socks that the dryer spit out without their partner can save the day! If you’re desperate, and are pretty sure your dryer isn’t relinquishing the matching sock any time soon, this can work in a pinch. If nothing else is available to use, and you don’t have any socks you’re willing to spare, grab a bulk package.
There are washable/reusable diapers, so it makes sense that there would be washable and reusable cloth baby wipes! These are a great alternative, because they can be washed and reused. Plus, they are super soft and a great size, too.
The closest thing to toilet paper would probably be facial tissues. Note that although they are similar, they are made very differently – toilet paper is made to break down in your pipes. Kleenex and facial tissues don’t break down. However, they sure do offer a great alternative to the real thing, and you can find some awesome deals on them!
Things like newspaper or that phone book you aren’t sure why you thought you’d need to keep – those will come in handy right now. Coffee filters are also a great alternative, because they are soft. You can also use pads of paper or any other paper product you can scrounge up.
Stay safe, healthy & sane!
