SHARK BITES – Target vs. Walmart: Savings Showdown
There are generally two types of shoppers. Those that love to save money, and take advantage of coupons and deals, and those that want a one-stop shopping experience and don’t look at prices. Within that first group, you’ll find that shoppers are loyal to either Walmart or Target. So, which offers the best prices? Let’s compare:
Advantages of shopping at Target:
- Get double the savings when you stack manufacturer coupons and Target Store coupons
- Download the Cartwheel app to save a percentage discount on specific items. This can be used with manufacturer coupons and Target store coupons
- Rebate apps like Ibotta will offer you cash back on your purchases. This can be combined with all coupons and Cartwheel to maximize savings.
- Mobile coupons will save you big money! Watch Freebie Shark for alerts on new available coupons.
- Clearance prices throughout the store are sweet finds. Score up to 90% off retail prices when you wait for clearance (especially seasonal items) to drop.
- Rain Checks are offered (at most locations) and will honor the sale price.
- Target gift card promotions offer you more savings by giving back.
- Price Matching is an awesome way to know you’re getting the best deal! Target will price match qualifying items if you find them for less at Target.com or other select online retailers OR Target or competitor’s local print ad.
- Target REDcard and Target REDcard debit cards will save you 5% on your purchases, plus give you other great perks.
- Bring in your own reusable shopping bag, and get an extra $.05 off your total.

Target offers so many wonderful ways to save money – from coupons to rebates, and Cartwheel offers to gift card promotions. Combine all of these for some serious savings and stock up possibilities!
Advantages of shopping at Walmart:
- Use manufacturer coupons to lower the already low prices. If your coupon value is higher than the price of the item, you’ll get that difference back!
- Rebate apps like Ibotta will offer you cash back on your purchases.
- Rain checks are offered if an advertised item is out-of-stock at your Walmart. They will issue you a rain check so that you can purchase the item at the advertised price when it becomes available.
- Simple price matches on current advertised sales are easy. Bring in the competitor’s ad and show it to the cashier for a price adjustment.
- When you shop, have Walmart.com pulled up in your internet browser. If you see a price cheaper online (which happens frequently), show the cashier for a price match!
- Savings Catcher App allows you to scan your receipt to find savings. They’ll compare prices and if they find something lower, you’ll get a credit via gift card!
- Get marked down prices on meat when you shop earlier in the morning. By around 8am, the meat department has marked down their prices. Items approaching their “sell by” date can be frozen and used later.
- Walmart Grocery allows you to order fresh groceries online with free same-day pickup. They will even load your groceries into your car!
- Watch the end caps, and clearance sections for amazing discounts. It’s always worth a stroll by to see what’s been marked down. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by some of the pricing – up to 90% off! Clearance items are found scattered throughout each section – so keep your eyes peeled!
As you can see, both retailers offer some great ways to save you money! Personally, I’m a Target fan because I think they offer some great perks that dramatically lower prices. However, if something isn’t on sale and isn’t offering a Cartwheel or coupon stack, Walmart is consistent with their prices and Roll Backs. Which store do you like best?
